(
I-Canada-News.Com, September 10, 2012 ) Burlington,Ontario -- Some of the most common signs of a
wet basement -- mold on the floor and walls, cracked or peeling paint, floor drains with moisture around them, and hard water stains near window wells and on walls – can creep up unexpectedly, causing untold damage to a home or business. But for home and business owners in the Greater Toronto Area, Wally’s
Waterproofing has been offering affordable and cutting edge solutions for wet or leaking basements for more than a decade. The company recently launched its new website where it provides detailed information on the causes of wet basements,
basement leaks and how each problem can be remedied.
A company spokesman said problems with a wet or leaking basement are easy to overlook, especially if the basement isn’t used regularly. Yet,
basement waterproofing is a straightforward process and waterproofing is crucial to protecting, for what is most people, their largest investment.
“The key to solving problems related to a wet basement is a visual, onsite inspection,” he said recently. “We’re happy to provide a free initial consultation over the phone, but it’s best to visit someone’s home or business to see for ourselves what the issue is.”
According to the spokesman, there are a number of possible causes and solutions for a wet basement or leaking basement:
• Cracked foundation walls. These appear most often in poured concrete foundations, and can surface several years after construction regardless of how good a job was done when the structure was built. “A couple of solutions we look at for this are epoxy or urethane injections, or replacing the waterproof membrane on the outside of the foundation,” a Wally’s Waterproofing spokesman said via email.
• Issues with cove joints and basement floor cracks are two other common problems leading to a wet basement. In this case, Wally’s Waterproofing may recommend an interior drain tile system or sump pumps after cracks in the floor or along the joints have been filled.
• Epoxy or urethane can be injected into the spaces between the tie rods and the basement foundation, as tie rods are known to be a source of leaks in many basements.
• Window wells are also the source of leaks, with the most common remedy being to seal around the window frame, or to install a window well cover to keep water out in the long term.
• Grading problems, especially with older homes or businesses. Ideally, landscaping features need to slope away from a structure, particularly one with a basement. This gives rain water a clear path to run away from the foundation, but over time – thanks to the elements, yard work, or who knows what – grading will flatten out, giving way to standing water and a direct path for water to damage a basement foundation.
