Cert Forensic Technician, an authority website in the field, has compiled a great amount of information aimed at those looking to embark on a career as a certified forensic science technician, also known as a crime scene investigator or CSI.
The job of a forensic science technologist is to help in the investigation of crime scenes by gathering and analyzing physical evidence. The position pays a decent salary of about $52,000 a year according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS also projects the demand for the position to grow at a steady rate of 19 percent over the next several years, a rate that is slightly higher than that of all other occupations which stands at 14 percent.
According to Cert Forensic Technician, the majority of CSI positions are offered in a crime lab. Crime labs are comprised of 5 different sections or units, the physical science, the biology, the firearms, the documents, and the photographic units; although there are other lab duties outside of the main 5 that CSIs perform, namely fingerprint and voice print analysis, toxicology, evidence collection and polygraph services, to name just a few.
Training programs are offered by a number of colleges and universities throughout the country. However, students need to ascertain that the program they pursue is accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission, or FEPAC; otherwise, eligibility for certification down the road may be jeopardized.
As far as schools, the website lists the top colleges for forensic science programs in the country; they include:
• University of Mississippi in Oxford
• Florida International University in Miami
• Pennsylvania State University, in University Park
• University of California, Davis
• The George Washington University
Most employers in the field are law enforcement agencies; however, there are private outfits that hire CSIs as well.
