(I-Canada-News.Com, June 12, 2012 ) La Prairie, Canada -- In its continuous quest to become the go-to place for those aspiring to become a certified medical assistant (CMA), Certified Medical Assistant Training has compiled a substantial amount of information designed to, among other things, bring to light everything that an individual needs to know in order to make an informed decision with regard to their future.
Considered to be the gold standard of medical assisting professionalism by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), a CMA is an individual who performs administrative as well as clinical duties to support the work of a physician. Duties include:
• Measuring the vital signs of a patient
• Administering injections and medication
• Keeping information and records in medical systems
• Collecting specimens such as body fluids and tissue for testing
According to Certified Medical Assistant Training, one of the most important parts of becoming a CMA is attending an accredited school. Education programs are accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). For students to be eligible to take the certification exam, they must complete an accredited medical assistant program.
While certification is not mandatory to work as a medical assistant, it is strongly suggested by the AAMA. Certification also enhances the stature of a medical assistant in the eyes of a potential employer, especially when searching for an entry-level position. According to the website, there are 600 CAAHEP and 200 ABHES accredited programs in 500 institutions across the country.
As far as salaries, Certified Medical Assistant Training states that entry-level positions pay upwards of $30,000 annually. Pay is dependent on many factors, some of which are experience, skills, responsibility and part of the country. Generally, CMAs make more as they build confidence and skill which allow them to become more and more valuable to the employer. CMAs who acquire the skills necessary to handle the responsibility that comes with working in large hospitals are also well remunerated for their work.
