Smaller Canadian Dine-In Chains Have Double Daily Caloric Totals

(I-Canada-News.Com, June 08, 2013 ) Alberta, Canada -- When it comes to dining out, residents in South Carolina may find it impossible to nab a healthy dish. While fast food has a bad reputation for being a dietary disaster for all who consume it, studies now show that sitting down to a meal at a restaurant does more damage to your overall health.

The University of Toronto have put in research published through the JAMA Internal Medicine journal that exposed information regarding the nutritional information of food in 19 sit-down restaurants. What the researchers found was that the average meal had well over 1,000 calories in its entirety. In the standard meal, over 56% of a daily caloric intake was absorbed in a single sit-down meal.

Researches noted previous work find that the average fast-food meal delivered, on average, 881 calories.

The calorie count found in restaurants were found to be high for all meals. A typical lunch at a sit-down restaurant was noted at 1,000 calories on average. Breakfast had a 1,226 calorie average.

"This was a little surprising, but the volume of food served in many breakfast options is comparable to those served at dinner time," said Mary Scourboutakos, one of the study's authors.

“The calorie count was only one worrisome aspect of the meals Scourboutakos and her colleagues analyzed, however,” she said.

"On average, they contained 151 percent of recommended daily salt intake, 89 percent of daily fat, and 60% of daily cholesterol," she said.

In a Canadian study used over 650 meals to gather their information. The numbers showed dining at smaller and independent eateries was worse for one's waist. According to the JAMA Internal Medicine handled by Tufts University in Boston, smaller independent businesses used more generous portions and less health-oriented meals to entice customers.

A Tuft investigator, Lorien Urban noted the difference in the smaller chains was nearly 600 calories more on average. That constituted a 90% increase. Nearly 10% of the meals at such restaurants contained more than a single-day's worth of calories. There were even a few that had double the daily quota.
