(I-Canada-News.Com, June 08, 2013 ) Calgary, Canada -- Neon signs, will be included under illuminated signs in the zoning code, are currently allowed in windows, as long as they don’t blink, flash or move. The proposed revision continues to limit overall window signage to no more than 25 percent of overall window space, and can also include a small “OPEN” neon sign which was previously permitted.
Neon signs were a hot topic in Palm Desert about three years ago when code enforcement officials began issuing notices to business owners using neon signs in their windows, violating a little-known ban on the signs.
There turned out to be tons of neon signs throughout the businesses in the city, including one in the window of planning commissioner Sonia Campbell’s sunglasses store.
At Thursday’s meeting the council, including Campbell appeared comfortable with the change, with the possible exception of Councilwoman Jean Benson, who said, “it seems like they’re suggesting that we just cave in.”
Giving the OK for neon signs is just one of several business sign issues incorporated into the zoning code update, for which the main goal is simply rearranging the document to make it easier to use and understand.
Another section of the zoning code restricts use of sidewalk signs along El Paseo during the summer. The signs must either be A-frames or pedestal signs, and could only say “OPEN” with the exception of the merchants logo. However, before the signs could be used, they would have to be submitted to the city for approval.
