New Study SHows Fluoride Definitely Benefits Teeth

(I-Canada-News.Com, May 11, 2013 ) Edmonton, Canada -- It has been more than 50 years since scientists first researched the basics of modern-day tooth care, and there is still controversy regarding how fluoride can actually reduce the risk of tooth decay. Now, there is new research coming out of Germany that is suggesting fluoride assists in the reduction of bacterial adhesion on teeth.

The study was recently published in the American Chemical Society journal.

The initial research regarding fluoride was handled in the late 40s and was continued into the early 50s, establishing that fluoride hardened enamel. The enamel is considered vitally important, as it protects the tooth from production of bacteria that causes decay. Studies that followed those initial findings then noted that fluoride also enhanced remineralization process.

Fluoride is said to continue the remineralization, and absorbs into teeth surfaces where tooth decay tends to occur. Another bonus of fluoride is the attraction of other mineral compounds that increase the process of remineralizing. According to studies, healthy remineralized teeth are stronger than teeth are in a healthy state but without the process.

Research from Saarland University in Germany is now reporting that the use of fluoride works not only in the aforementioned ways, but also in reducing decay-causing bacteria. By using fluoride, more bacteria can be easily washed away through brushing and drinking water.

The study was handled using fake teeth, as opposed to teeth within patients mouths, to allow for higher analytic techniques being applied. Scientists utilized bacterial probes to measure the use of fluoride. They also utilized differing types of bacteria in order to test all possible outcome results.

The bacteria showed to be decreased with the use of fluoride. This was true even for streptococcus mutans and streptococcus oralis, forms of strep-throat.
