Study: Mediterranean Diet Lowers 'Bad' Cholesterol, Regardless of Weight Loss

(I-Canada-News.Com, May 09, 2013 ) Ontario, Canada -- For the many men around the world who are at high risk for heart disease, there is new hope regarding how to lower 'bad' holesterol, thanks to the finding in a new study. The new study actually holds some older conclusions, as the research suggests at the Mediterranean diet is heart-healthy for such men, even if they have trouble losing weight during the process.

The study tallies came from research that involved 19 men, aged 24 to 52, each of whom had metabolic syndrome. The affliction meant that each had three or more risk factors that were direct links to metabolic either heart disease and/or stroke. The risk factors for these men

included larger waist size, higher blood pressure, and lowered levels of HDL cholesterol (known as good cholesterol).

The study spanned a five-week period, wherein each participant at a standard diet that consisted of high fats, carbohydrates, and processed sugars. Following the first week, the men were switched to a Mediterranean diet. The diet consists of a higher percentage of

fruits, veggies, and whole grains (instead of processed white grain). The diet also lowers the amount of red meat, focusing more on white meat and fish, and includes more olive oil and regular low-level wine consumption.

Following the five-week diet routine, the men entered into a five month weight-loss program, that included another five weeks of the latter diet type. What the research found was that the men, regardless of weight loss, saw a decrease of 9% in their LDL numbers during the consumption of the Mediterranean diet. The results will be presented in an upcoming American Heart Association seminar.

The Mediterranean diet "may be recommended for effective management of the metabolic syndrome and its related risk of cardiovascular disease," said lead study author Caroline

Richard, a registered dietitian and doctoral candidate in nutrition at Laval University in Quebec, Canada.
