(I-Canada-News.Com, April 16, 2013 ) Vancouver, Canada -- According to a new study from the University of Missouri's Department of Human Development and Family Studies, couples that share chores and child-rearing make happier married couples.
Still, sharing responsibilities like cleaning and daily errands for the child do not necessarily mean couples divide shores down the middle, according to Adam Galovan.
"Sharing can mean something different to every couple," Galovan said.
"It could be taking turns changing diapers or one parent watching the children while the other prepares dinner. Doing things together and having mutual, agreed-upon divisions of labor benefited both spouses," he said in a statement.
Galovan and his Brigham Young University and Utah State University colleagues took surveyed from 160 heterosexual couples in order to find out how parents divided household responsibilities. They also looked into how those chores affected the couples relationships.
All the couples averaged five years and had a minimum of one child of five (or younger). Many of the parents were between the ages of 25 and 30, with about 40% of the women holding full or part-time jobs.
"The more wives perceived that husbands were engaged in routine family work tasks, the better the relationships were for both partners," Galovan said.
"Wives in our study viewed father involvement and participation in household chores as related. Doing household chores and being engaged with the children seem to be important ways for husbands to connect with their wives, and that connection is related to better couple relationships," he said
