(I-Canada-News.Com, April 01, 2013 ) Lethbridge, Alberta -- The future of the Los Angeles demographic is one that is set to gray . The change is to be within the the next generation's worth of time, as the aging boomers slowly immigrate while the shrinking birth rates radically shift the face of the country, according to a recent USC study.
Seventeen years from now, seniors will make up only 20% of the country's population, while almost twice as many as were around last millennium try to find ways to exist in a work set more for the younger generations, according to Dowell Myers and John Pitkin of the USC Population Dynamics Research Group.
At the same time, the overall number of births will fall as many families choose to have less children, according to the study. Birth rates are already in a state of decline, and will fall as families choose to have due to immigration plunging, which sharply reduced the flow of newcomers who have had larger families.
The predicted outcome of these two fundamental changes is that fewer young workers will be available to care for the growing ranks of the elderly, and a trend could thus pinch the collective pocketbooks of society, as well as the personal pocketbooks of families.
The study has predicted that over the next two decades, the Los Angeles County area will gain nearly 867,000 seniors, and will lose over 630,000 people under the age of 25. A similar trend is now underway across the nation, but L.A. Seems to stand out due to the shift despite the immigration-based growth that was seen previously, creating a sharp contrast, says Myers.
“Los Angeles County is the most extreme example in California, and probably in the country” of the radical changes in population makeup to come nationally, he said. “Everything’s changed in California because we’re losing kids – and ground zero is Los Angeles County.”
