Also, DHA is used by the retina to protect retinal pigment cells from damage and studies show that a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acid may reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
There are also studies that point to omega 3 fatty acids helping with diabetic eye disease and glaucoma problems. Tissue rich in omega-3 fatty acids reduces the stimulus that causes the retina to become low in oxygen which worsens the diabetic disease process. Because people with glaucoma tend to have low blood levels of DHA and EHA adding these acids can help modulate the microcirculation blood flow in the eye and the optic nerve. The benefits to those with these diseases is immeasurable.
